History Tuesday: Warrenton School
Education has long been a cornerstone of the Warrenton community, and the story of Warrenton School is one of growth, resilience, and commitment to learning. The first school in Warrenton, likely a simple log structure, was located near the current courthouse. As the town grew, so did the need for a dedicated learning space. By the late 19th century, the Warrenton Academy had become a well-established institution. Early education in the area often separated boys and girls into different buildings, with the "Boys’ Academy" and the "Girls’ Academy" operating in tandem. Over time, these schools were consolidated, and by the early 1900s, a modern, brick schoolhouse stood as a testament to Warrenton’s investment in education. The 1908 Warrenton School (pictured here) was a significant step forward, offering a more structured curriculum, better facilities, and even a growing library. The school system continued to evolve, overcoming challenges like fires and structural rebuilding to serve generations of students. By 1928, a city school district was established, leading to even further expansion and educational opportunities for Warren County’s children.
