History Tuesday: The Turtle Submarine – America’s First Submarine
Warrenton = Home of the Inventor of the Turtle Submarine In 1775, American inventor David Bushnell revolutionized naval warfare with the Turtle, the world’s first military submarine. This one-man, hand-powered vessel was designed to sneak up on British warships and attach explosive charges to their hulls during the American Revolution. The Turtle featured a wooden, barrel-shaped body, a system of ballast tanks for submersion, and a hand-cranked propeller for movement—an impressive feat of engineering for its time!Though it never successfully completed a mission, the Turtle was a pioneer in underwater warfare, inspiring future submarine designs that would eventually change naval combat forever. If you could witness any historical invention in action, which one would it be? Let us know in the comments! Courtesy: Warren County Chamber of Commerce
